May the first was the National Day of Prayer, a day when over a million Christians and many churches across America took time to petition God on behalf of our country and to confess our nation's sins. It couldn't have come at a more appropriate time.
You probably never heard one word on any of the national news about this national day of prayer because the news outlets were too busy promoting and hyping up the Ellen show in which the lead actress, Ellen Degeneres, revealed for all the nation to see, that she was gay. This is supposed to be news? We didn't know that Hollywood has homosexuals?
But what a media frenzy it was. Time magazine put Degeneres on the front cover. Oprah Winfrey devoted one episode to the woman. One of the networks weekly news documentaries interviewed her. For months ABC prepared the nation for the coming out of Ellen. Then they brag about how many watched the show? After all the hype, what would they expect?
This Ellen episode is but one example of a larger media campaign to promote homosexuality by saturating the channels of information in our society with themes that affirm this previously stigmatized behavior. This is precisely what squeaky clean Walt Disney and her partner company ABC teamed up to do in the latest episode of Ellen. It is nothing more really than a blatant attempt to promote homosexuality to America's families.
Their message is simply that gay is OK. Ellen's shrink, played by Oprah Winfrey, tells Ellen, "It's OK to be gay." Coming from Oprah, this settles it. Case closed. And when Ellen tells her male and female freinds about her new realization, the reactions are predictable. No one is appalled or troubled by the news. "Well, I for one, think it's super!" gushes Audrey. Naturally, the resident gay guy is also elated.
This new morality is being celebrated, embraced, affirmed and sold by the media elite to an often unsuspecting public. One celebrant watching the show from a S.F. party said he thought the show was historic. "It was watching where we are in this country." Excuse me, but we are supposed to party over this? That is scary! Tobacco companies make products that kill the body. The networks spew forth material that poisons the mind and the soul. Which is worse?
If Opray can get on nationwide TV and give her opinion that "It's OK to be gay" I suppose that it should be OK to at least read God's opinion on the same subject. "Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkdards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." Now we have a choice to believe either Oprah or God. I think it should be no contest!
God is holy and He has standards and he expects us to uphold his standards and he will one day hold us accountable as to whether or not we have kept his standards. We Christians ought to speak up for God's standards and not be intimidated into silence. One TV director in the area editorialized that if we could not say something nice about Ellen, then we should say nothing at all. Hogwash! God doesn't say a lot of nice things about sin, but he does without hesitation condemn it. We should not be ashamed or embarrassed about taking God's position on morality or ethics. Nor should we be silent!
So let all Christians stand up for what we believe. Let us not be ashamed or intimidated by those who would silence us. It isn't only the opposition who has the right to say what they think and to stand for what they believe. And let all Christians be careful and judicious about what we watch on TV and what we allow our children to watch. There are shows that Jesus would never watch or let children watch. We claim to be his disciples, remember. On the other hand there are some wonderful TV programs that Jesus would be happy to watch and which he would be happy for children to watch. Christians are not only opposed to evil. We are supportive of the good.
