He That Would Love Life

Here are some things certain experts say can kill you: fake sugar, real salt, beef, chicken, fish, eggs, vegetables treated with anything, popcorn made with canola oil, potato chips, pizza, peanut butter, ice cream, coffee, tap water, and anything else that might taste good.

Now, some things that will keep you alive: monogamy, a nagging spouse, taking out the garbage, washing dishes, family vacations, prayer, mortgage payments, car payments, orthodontist payments, church meetings.

The news media has faithfully reported all the deadly foods that can kill us, but where have you read about the revelation that you can add years to your life by marrying, staying married and getting right with God?

An article in a recent issue of the National Review calls attention to the overlooked findings of Dr. David Larson, president of the National Institute of Healthcare Research. Consider his conclusions about the relationship between marriage and mortality.

If you want to die early and miserable, dump your mate. The average divorced man can expect to live a decade less than if he stayed married. Divorced men enter psychiatric hospitals 21 times more often than their married counterparts. An amazing 45 % haven't seen their kids in the last year.

Divorced women also take it on the chin. They too have significantly higher death rates and miss 50 % more work than their married colleagues. And both sexes when separated or divorced abuse alcohol and drugs five times as often as their tied down equals who remain married.

For a public obsessed with health and living this is spectacular news. According to research collected by respectable physicians and social scientists, if you pray and stay married, you'll live longer, weigh less, earn more, make less trouble and enjoy higher self esteem. Despite this, the press has largely ignored the sensational revelation that faith and fidelity can add years to your life. Instead, editors have focused on the evils of Demon Popcorn and politicians have jumped on the "sue the tobacco companies" bandwagon. The truth is that pollution of the soul damages the body as much as or more than anything else.

In the world's most ancient book of wisdom God has for centuries been telling us the same thing. "He that would love life and see good days must ...turn from evil and do what is good." "I am the Lord your God who teaches you what is best for you and who leads you in the way you ought to go. If only you had listened to me, your peace would have been like a river and your righteousness like the waves of the sea."

There's more to life than reading labels and hyperventilating. Jesus says, "I have come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly." Try him out why don't you and you will discover that you are happier and healthier doing things God's way. He always knows what is best.
