Three times in this part of his sermon Jesus tells us not to worry, specifically about material things. It is a wonderful thought that Jesus came to deliver us from the scourge of worry.
The death of Jesus should make us think of what there is in the human predicament about which we might MOST worry: the wicked sinfulness of man, death, the judgment of a holy God, an eternal hell, and our desperate need of salvation from sin and death.
During the Lord’s Supper we can celebrate that Jesus has delivered us from all these worries: sin, death, judgment, and hell. And the same God who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all will give us all lesser things. Truly we don’t need to worry about a thing!
